Digital Nomad Visa Renewal in Spain (2026): What’s Changed & What You Need

If your Digital Nomad Visa renewal is coming up, the portal requirements have moved since your original application — and in a few places, the scrutiny is noticeably closer to what first-time applicants go through. Here’s a practical breakdown of what a 2026 renewal file needs.

The tax return requirement: a full filing, not a certificate

Renewal files now need a complete copy of the tax return itself — filed with the Agencia Tributaria — covering the two fiscal years immediately before the renewal. A standard certificate confirming you filed on time is no longer sufficient on its own.

For a renewal submitted in 2026, that means the full declarations for 2024 and 2025. Depending on your residency situation, this may be a resident filing (Modelo 100) or a non-resident filing (Modelo 210) — your tax advisor can confirm which applies to your case.

Practical takeaway: if your renewal folder currently only holds a filing certificate, that’s worth upgrading to the full return before submission, since incomplete tax documentation is one of the more common causes of a subsanación request right now.

Income consistency matters more than a single good year

If income across the two years is uneven, the safest approach is to aim for consistent earnings in both years rather than relying on savings or liquid funds to bridge a gap after the fact. Evidence of savings can support a file where genuinely needed, but a steady income record across both years is the stronger position going into the renewal.

Autónomo registration timing after your original approval

One of the more consequential issues we’re seeing in current renewal files: applicants who took several months to register as autónomo after their original approval are increasingly being asked to explain the gap, or to backdate their registration to the day after that approval.

A few things worth knowing if this applies to your case:

  • Backdating is possible. It typically takes around two to three weeks and comes with back-payments and surcharges for the uncovered period, so it’s worth starting the process well before your renewal deadline.
  • Documentation can justify a delay instead of backdating it — appointment availability, processing times, and similar records can support an explanation if the gap was outside your control.
  • A denial on this basis isn’t necessarily final. Backdating the registration and requesting approval again afterward is a valid path.

The safest long-term habit: register as autónomo as quickly as possible after any approval, and keep every appointment confirmation and receipt — that record is exactly what supports an explanation later if the timing is ever questioned.

Filing details that are easy to overlook

  • The renewal fee differs from the initial application. Renewal payments go through Modelo 790 038 at €78.67, compared with €73.26 for the original processing fee.
  • Passport requirements are lighter. A clear scan of the biographical page is enough; you no longer need to submit every page.
  • Digital signing is preferred for the renewal application form (Formulario MIT) — using a valid digital certificate or Cl@ve over a handwritten signature.
  • Timing: you can file anywhere from 60 days before your TIE expires up to 90 days after.
  • Mind your travel plans during that window. Filing after expiry is allowed, but an expired TIE restricts leaving and re-entering Spain unless you first secure a return authorization (autorización de regreso).
  • Changing your professional setup counts as a new application, not a renewal. Moving from employee to autónomo (or the reverse) between your original approval and your renewal means filing the fuller initial-application paperwork, not the lighter renewal package.

If you’re renewing as an employee

Clients who remain employees (rather than autónomos) have a slightly different set of requirements:

  • Where a bilateral Social Security agreement applies: submit a Certificate of Applicable Legislation (A1 form or equivalent Certificate of Coverage).
  • Where no such agreement exists: submit proof that your employer has requested Spanish registration, along with a signed commitment to enroll in the Spanish system (compromiso de alta).
  • Health coverage: full public or private medical insurance valid in Spain is required — travel insurance doesn’t satisfy this — though this drops away if a bilateral agreement applies or you’re already contributing directly to Spanish Social Security.

IncomeConsistent earnings across both years recommended
Autónomo registrationRegister promptly after approval; backdate or justify any significant delay
PassportBiographical page only
MIT form signatureDigital certificate or Cl@ve preferred
Renewal fee€78.67 (Modelo 790 038)
Filing window60 days before to 90 days after expiry
Change of employer/clientRequires more documentation, closer to initial-application level
Change of status (employee ↔ autónomo)Treated as a new initial application, not a renewal
Employee-specific documentsA1/Certificate of Coverage or compromiso de alta, plus health insurance proof

Renewal files are getting more document-heavy, and the areas above — tax filings, income consistency, and Social Security timing — are where most avoidable delays currently happen. If your renewal window is approaching, the highest-value thing you can do now is pull together both years of tax returns and confirm your autónomo registration history well before submission.
